Are you a big fan of comics?

I’m not a big comic book collector or reader to be honest. I was at one point in my life, but as time’s gone by I find myself buying less and reading less comics, no real reason why, it’s just sorta they way of things right now. I have a strange fascination with the world of esoterica.

So what do you do for fun?

For fun I watch a lot of TV and cook food, spend time with my fiancee and my dog. I don’t get out of the house to often.

Let’s get onto your artwork. How would you describe it?

That’s a good question…I’m not sure how to describe my artwork, other than it’s all an experiment. I try different things and see what works and what doesn’t. I like a realistic type of art as far as my comics artwork goes, I tend to be drawn towards that sorta stuff when I draw.

But I’m still in a learning process as far as I can tell; I certainly don’t have “it” down yet. Then again I find that part fun, the learning part.

How did you learn how to draw or develop your style?

Self taught. I had art classes in high school and that was about it, and that was a long, long time ago. Everything I know I’ve learned or swiped from other people. I keep thinking i need to take some life drawing classes and extend my education beyond comic art, so that i can be better at comic art.

But time and money play big factors in my excuses not to get off my butt and just do it. I’m a hack, what can i say?

Any particualr artistic influences you’d like to name?

Geesh, where to begin? I’ll just throw out a few names of artists I like in no particular order.

Mike Mignola, Adam Hughes, John Paul Leon, J.H. Williams, Kevin Nolan, Bryan Hitch, J.G. Jones, Alex Maleev, Mike Oeming . . . There’s so many artists I enjoy and try to learn something from there style or technique.

Do you also write or just focus on art?

I also write! I find myself writing a lot more nowadays. I’m trying to get a few pitches and books off the ground with some very talented artists and writers, who have agreed to draw what I’ve written down, or I’ve been coaxed into drawing myself.

Awesome! Do you have anything you’re written floating around somewhere?

I also have an on-going web comic “The Front” over at Ten Ton Studios. That’s on a short hiatus at the moment. It’s a sorta “make it up as we go along”, there’s a definite plot And story, but I allow myself the freedom to go in any direction I or the artists who work on it want for the most part. Most of the guys I work with are way more talented than me, so it’s a lot of fun to see the stuff they produce.

I’ve noticed you were connected to Ten Ton Studios? Can you tell me a little more about it?

Ah . . Ten Ton Studios. My home away from home.

Here’s the basics, Ten Ton was formed out of an anthology that never was. All the artists and writers involved, we decided to form a virtual online studio to show off our art and we created a forum where others could do the same. Now some 4 years later it’s taken off, and a lot of the guys have become big names in the industry and lots of forum members have also gotten pro work.

It’s a fun place to be, lots of silliness and great artwork to look at. Ten Ton has some really extremely talented members. I think we’re just trying to keep it the way it is and a place for people to come by, when they have time. Participate by showing their art or writing and just having the fun of getting to know other artists.

We’re not the same as a lot of online comic boards. I think we truly offer something different. I mean what other comic forum are you going to be on, and then you go to a convention and end up having 20 some odd friends to go out and get food and drink with? We’re friends as well as artists. It’s a really cool place; I can’t say enough good things about Ten Ton and the people on the boards.

Thanks for all your time!
Good luck with your art and your writing.

  1. Violet says:

I love the background shading in the finished version, very cool!

  2. thanks Violet! glad you like it.

  3. Jason’s use of blacks and establishing a rich balance of the positive/negative is fantastic. He clearly understands illustrating the human body and dynamic camera angle. The layout works on so many levels and draws the viewer in to the character. I wish Jason continued success with his art.
    peace

  4. Thank you, Frankie!
