Recommended Graphic Novels – How to tempt your friends?
When some people think of graphic novels, they think of comics and balk at the thought of reading a “superhero comic“. Blog site pornokitsch provides a couple of great recommendations to get people into the medium who may not want to read the standard “superhero stops evil bad guy” plot. I agree with his picks (e.g. Fables / Kingdom Come / Death : The High Cost of Living) but would add a couple more to the list :
Pride of Baghdad – Brian K. Vaughan & Niko Henrichon
An amazing story about freedom with lions!
Bone – Jeff Smith
Epic masterpiece for those with the taste of high fantasy (or Tolkien fans looking for another Lord of the Rings story to sink their teeth into.)
Sin City – Frank Miller
The classic film noir graphic novel of a city with colourful and dangerous characters. The tough guy, the femme fatale, the innocent victim, all reside in Sin City with their own stories to tell.

I think Pride is a fantastic pick – I think I recommended it last Christmas as the perfect left-wing stocking stuffer – and I can’t believe I forgot about it on this list.
Sin City would definitely depend on the person – I like the self-contained storylines and the stylish art, but it wouldn’t appeal to everyone. But if someone liked the rain and blood from Watchmen, that’s the book for them…
Will need to reread Bone, I don’t think I ever got past book 1 (which is around here somewhere), but I remember, for a few people in college, that was the only comic on the shelf. Oddly popular with the non-geeks!

You should definitely re-read Bone. If you can find the one volume edition, that’s the best! It doesn’t feel like an epic to start but really builds up to it.

Pride of Baghdad was bought by one of my friends and he’s a big comic fan. He loved it, and what I saw I liked (come to think of it, I gotta borrow it next time I see him).
Think of the Lion King meets the comic world, with politics, violence and humans thrown in.
Good for girls who like cutesy animals too (or if they’re into LOLCATS)
