Looking forward to taking a little break as the holidays roll around. Still a lot of shows that I have to catch up on as well as a lot of reading. Dan Brown’s Lost Symbol has still been sitting patiently at my bedside table waiting to be read. It’s high on my list to do when the break from work arrives!

From Gilelvgren.com by Charles G. Martignette :
“Gil Elvgren (1914-1980) was the most important pin-up and glamour artist of the twentieth century. During his professional career, which began in the mid 1930s and lasted more than forty years, he established himself as the clear favorite of pin-up collectors and fans worldwide. Although most of his work was created for commercial use, it has been increasingly recognized as “real” art by many private collectors, dealers, galleries and museums. And indeed, though Elvgren has been considered as mainly a pin-up artist this last half-century, in reality he deserves recognition as a classical American illustrator whose career encompassed many different fields of commercial art. He was always a master in portraying feminine beauty, but his output was by no means confined to the calendar pinup industry.”

As well as detailed sketches, his does some amazing colouring work. Definitely worth seeing more of his work including a G.I.
I’ve always had a thing for the Baroness. Maybe it’s the fact that’s she’s extremely hot, deliciously evil and wears glasses. Something about bad girls I suppose . . . This however does make an interesting contrast to Wonder Woman who’s really DC’s good girl.

Back in September I showcased Bayonetta by Jame Tyndall for a Wizard competition. Jamie also did this incredible Rolling Stone with Wonder Woman as a feature. I don’t think why the song “Papa was a rolling stone” popped in my head but it’s not leaving. Arrgh!

Final Cover :

Sketch

So where are you from? How did you get into comics?

I’m a 70’s kid from Brantford, ON. I grew up on GIJOE and Star Wars. A cousin of mine got me hooked on comic book, mainly X-Men, as a teenager and I started drawing comics at around the same time. I guess I just never stopped!

How would you describe your artwork?

I enjoy the art of 1990’s to early 2000 comic books. I think it reflects in my work. One word to describe my art: detail. I love details in the characters and backgrounds. Since I also ink and colour my work, my love of details often comes back to bite me.

Did you pursue any specific path to follow your artwork?

I went to both UofT (University of Toronto) and Sheridan College in a co-studies program in Arts, Arts History. I did do some studio art while in school. As far as comic book art, I learned by referencing artists I enjoy and going to comic-con to meet artists and ask questions. I learned a lot at comic cons from Joel Gomez, Beth Sotelo and Alex Sinclair. They have been generous with their time and I thank them for that.

Who do you rate as your artistic influences?

I am inspired by the art of Jim Lee, J. Scott Campbell, Marc Silvestri and the late Michael Turner. For colours, I reference Peter S., Alex Sinclair and Beth Sotelo. If anyone references any of these artist in relation to my artwork, they’ll make my day.

Thanks for your time!
As well as letting me showcase your work. Keep watching this space as I will be getting more of Jamie’s work up.

Nicola Scott is one of the more prominent comic artists currently living in Sydney. She’s currently exclusive on DC having worked on Birds of Prey and Secret Six. I was lucky enough to meet her during her appearance at Free Comic Day May 2008 where she was nice enough to draw a Wonder Woman sketch for me. During her talk she revealed she wanted to become an actress prior to picking up the pencils. Her most memorable on air appearance was as the Southern Comfort Bourbon girl.

Troy is an illustrator from the greater Seattle area (although he doesn’t drink espresso) who’s a self confessed Hello Kitty fan. With a fluid style his sketch work is one of the best I’ve seen with a very nice sense of movement.

Besides Hello Kitty what do you do for fun?

I am a judo player going on two decades now and like to snowboard, draw, play with legos and (re)read comic books. My family is a big part of my life, so I am always blending time with them into my fun pursuits.

How would you describe your artwork?

Ugh – that’s a hard one for any artist.

I know it’s a tough question but it’s always nice to hear it from the artist’s point of view.

The host of Dr. Sketchy’s described my style as “every line means something… each line is vital with nothing extra added.” Other folks have called my approach “line art” or “sexy lines”. I can’t argue with that last one . . . its what I am trying to do.

Are you self-taught? Training?

I have always drawn, but I did not take formal art/design classes until college. I use how-to books, web tutorials, life drawing classes and ask other artists for suggestions and pointers. My philosophy is you can learn from everyone, even if it’s what NOT to do.

Artistic influences?

A look around my studio walls has work by: Patrick Nagel, Take Hama, Adam Hughes, Trent Parke, David Mack, Matt Tamaru, eboy, Travis Charest, Dan DeCarlo, tokidoki, Michael Schwab, Alphons Mucha, Shane Glines, Phil Noto and my daughter.

Thanks for your time and wish you all the best in your future endeavours.

For his artwork sample, Troy provided two Wonderwoman sketches for approval.

Sketch 1 :

Sketch 2 :

I much preferred Sketch 1 as it gave the character a better presence, like she was staring you down. Troy also mentioned “I can finish either one with an inking style that is more quick and loose (Dr. Sketchy’s) or more polished and slick.” I requested a Dr Sketchy’s still and the below is the finished result.

Luis XIII is part of a Brazilian group of illustrators. He’s very professional and was very quick to provide the preliminaries and the final drawings. Unfortunately the below scan doesn’t do the final product any justice (pun intended) as a lot of the pencilling detail is lost.

This is a very different feel to Spidey by GW Fisher. There’s less movement in this piece compared to the the GW commission but it’s still incredible. Unfortunately I couldn’t get it inked at the time . . . something to look into in the future!

Check out more of his work at http://www.skrashdrawings.com
