It’s really hard to pick a single piece in 2011 which so much great artwork but after a tough time, Frank Kadar’s coloured Arkham piece was my choice. (Definitely Joker’s crazy eyes that made it memorable!)

So what’s waiting in 2012? Well it’s a blockbuster year for comic movies with Avengers bringing all the characters from Marvel’s shared universe and the Nolan’s final chapter in the Batman Trilogy, The Dark Knight Rises. Both trailers are incredible and the 7min prologue with Bane is buzzing up the anticipation.

Hope it’s a great 2012 for everyone. Be good!

I’m a bigger fan of Harley in the Jester costume but she looks pretty fine dressed as a nurse in this picture.

Poison Ivy :

The trick with the Joker is in the eyes. He needs those crazy, sadistic eyes to make him menacing otherwise he’s really just another guy with clown facepaint. Frank really nailed the eyes in this piece!

Final :
The final result is amazing, Frank manages to integrate the blacks with the bright colours of the villains’ costumes. Although Batman has the centre position, it’s the rogues who takes the centre stage! When I first saw the original artwork I thought it was fantastic but am blown away by the extra dimension the colours add.

If you like his work, Frank currently has some FULL COLOUR SKETCH CARD Commissions on eBay. This is a great opportunity to own an original piece of his artwork. It’s a rare chance, so make sure you get in quick with Frank!

Harley Quinn – Poison Ivy :

I’m glad this first photo turned out! The convention hall was very dark and without a flash, you just had to open up the aperture, keep your hands steady and shoot! Joker would be so happy with the costume, the cosplayer won a prize if I remember right.

Star Wars – Cutest little Storm Trooper :

The cutest little storm trooper, her helmet was on the desk behind. Before I took this photo I asked a couple of questions.

Me : Wow . . you’re a cute stormtrooper. Have you seen the movies?

Cutest Stormtrooper : (nods)

Me : Who’s your favourite Star Wars character?

Cutest Stormtrooper : Dora.

Mum : No honey, he’s asking which is your favourite Star Wars. Dora wasn’t in Star Wars.

Cutest Stormtrooper : But mummy . . I like Dora.

Where are you from?

Originally Massachusetts. For the past 21 years I’ve lived in the South: North Carolina, Georgia, and then back to Charlotte, NC since 98.

What type of works have you done?

I’ve worked on an Independent book called NIGHT as artist and co creator. I recently had an opportunity to work with Upper Deck, and by extension Marvel on the Marvel Masterpieces 3 card set by doing 150 sketch cards. Right now I’m working with a company called Rittenhouse doing some sketch cards for a couple of projects they have coming out in early 09. I’ve got a few other opportunities in the works that I really hope work out. . .

What type of training have you done?

A little of both self-taught and formal training. I’ve been drawing as long as I can remember. My dad taught me early on; he’d sit with me at the kitchen table and show me how to draw basic things. He was always very patient. From that point on I was always interested in art classes in school, which I followed throughout High School.

I’m not sure why, but I got away from pursuing illustration for a number of years, and didn’t go to college for it, though I would always draw for relaxation. I ended up being creatively stagnated during those years trying to improve, but not having a true focus. I had friends tell me I should pursue it more and finally in the early 90’s got back into illustrating, doing t-shirts and stuff. I’ve only been seriously pursuing becoming a comic book penciller for the last 10 years. I’ve really been doing self-study since then.

And the final question, who do you class as an artistic influence?

As far as influences, there are so many. When I was growing up . . Jack Kirby, John Buscema, Neal Adams, Curt Swan, Ross Andru. . . these days there are a bunch or guys out there whose work is awesome, too many to list. I can usually find something to take away from looking at another artists work. Often its things I feel are areas I need improvement. I try not to copy anyone’s style, I just try to do the best representations of the characters I’m asked to draw.
