I thought I’d showcase the packets of my two favourite (and best) instant noodles, Indomie Mi Goreng (as you know) and Mama Tomyum noodles. The Tomyum noodles are not for the faint of heart as it has a pretty strong hotness quotient. What are your favourite instant snacks?

Talking about noodles, one geek food recipe I’ve always wanted to try was Indomie Mi Goreng with Nando’s Peri Peri sauce. The recipe was simple, make the Indomie as per the packet instructions, place an egg on top and add the Peri Peri sauce. It’s a fantastic variant for a late night fast hunger buster when there’s no much in the pantry.

Starting -

Raw ingredients -

Cook the noodles as per the instructions on the packet. Make sure the water is well drained, if it’s soggy it doesn’t taste as good!

Adding the sauces -

Pouring the Peri Peri -

Finished product -

I had fun with these photos using my Canon 40D paired with the 17-55 f2.8 telephoto lens. I find I don’t use my SLR as much as I would like to but everytime I do it’s a lot of fun. Looking back on these photos makes me want to make this right now!

Ryo’s Ramen situated in Crows Nest is one of the trinity of ramen shops in Sydney (which includes Genki in Artarmon & Menya in the CBD). Off the three places, Ryo’s is my favoruite with the queue to get in the only problem. The broth is absolutely fantastic and their ramen is easily the tastiest.

Tonkutsu Ramen :

It’s curious though, you can ask for a less salty version but the less salty version usually taste a little more salty? One of those mysteries?

Tonkutsu Ramen (Again) :

If you sit near the door, you will elicit stares from the hungry people waiting outside. And if you’re waiting outside, it’s torture to see people slurping the noodles and enjoying themselves!

Menu plastered across the yellow wall :

There’s a menu in English but I always think how cool it would be to actually be able to read and understand everything that’s written there. All photos were taken with a Canon G11, the images are sharp and it’s more portable that the Canon 40D (as much as I love the 40D).

As a follow to “What makes a good Char Kway Teow?”, I thought I’d show you what was considered by some as the best Char Kway Teow in Penang. It’s from a shop called Sister’s located on Macalister Road.

I doubt you can find anything even remotely like it anywhere else in the world. Penang is the hawker food capital of the world even compared with the capital of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur! The little sprinkling of crab meat on the top really adds to the flavour. All photos were taken with my trusty Canon G11. The macro shots on this camera is incredible and although not SLR quality, it’s still rather impressive.

It’s a been a while since my last food post so I thought I’d slip one more in before 2010 rolls in. Nestled in Crows Nest is Burlington Bar and Dining which has some scrumptious food. I’d let the photos (taken by Toshio) do the talking.

1kg of Stockyard 36 month old, 200 day grain fed rib eye :

Salt & pepper squid & crisp fried shallots :

Tiramisu :

The steak was incredible with a tenderness that reminded me of wagyu for the melt in your mouth texture. It was fantastic with some hot english mustard and red wine jus. It’s not cheap but worth it! The tiramisu was amazing and it’s one of the few places where it isn’t too sweet with a nice bitter after taste. Anyway . . with Christmas over, it’s a great time to sneak in for some of the Boxing Day to New Year’s Day Sales.

It’s been a while since my last food related post. Thought I’d share some photos taken by Toshio at a recent yum cha (dim sum) in Sydney CBD at a restaurant called Zilver.

Lotus Leaf Chicken Rice :

Zha Liang :

Siu Mai :

Egg Tart :

I really don’t know if explanations are warranted but just in case, Siu Mai is a pork dumpling whilst Zha Liang is deep fried bread wrapped in rice paper. I’m much prefer the steam dishes as opposed to the deep fried ones.

What makes a good yum cha outing?

(01) A wide assortment of choices
You need to be able to choose and try new things as well as be able to have the old favourites.

(02) Fried Foods
You need these ones piping hot and not too oily.

(03) Steamed Foods
It’s difficult but the skin surrounding most of the dumplings should be thick enough to hold the contents but not too thick as to be starchy. Well steamed so the contents are cooked.

(04) Good Company
In the words of Stan Lee. ‘Nuff Said.

A good scone can’t be too dry and maintain a texture in between a cake and a bun. These ones are very “melt in your mouth” and a perfect complement to the tea. I love a splash of cream and jam for the experience.

The broth was made using over 120kg of pork bones and was a little too thick for me but I was told this was how this dish is originally made. The pork spare rib was especially tasty although a little difficult to eat with chopsticks.

Worth trying although next time I’ll be taking the option for the less thick version of the soup!
